Obituary for Timothy "Timi" Carstarphen

Timothy "Timmy" Carstarphen, 70, of St. Thomas, died Friday, March 18, 2016, at Schneider Regional Medical Center. In the mid-fifties he first arrived in St. Thomas at 10 years old on the yacht "Shellback" with sister Tere and parents Jack and Ruth. They cruised the Caribbean, returning in 1959 to finally settle here for good. A new home, the much larger yacht "Maverick", became well-known as one of a handful of boats chartering here at that time.

After a stint in the army Timi again returned and became captain of the first Bomba Charger. Later were countless voyages and adventures which fed his skill as both sailor and raconteur. Somehow there was time to construct a building out East for a restaurant/marine chandlery known as Fabian's Landing, still active today with three businesses. Friend and mentor Don Street wrote "Timi was in his heyday the finest all around seaman I ever sailed with...a great seaman and a true friend."

He will be lovingly remembered by his sister, Tere Batham, brother Orne Carstarphen, Darby Carstarphen, niece Marina Simon, nephews Aaron and Rivers Carstarphen and Conrad Batham, great nieces Lucia and Sophia Simon and Nicky Batham, great nephew Connor Batham and cousin Mike Fabian and many, many friends especially Geoff Curtin, Roy "P-Cock" Smith and Harley Smith. His son, Kimball Rivers Carstarphen predeceased him and is with him now helping to trim the sails.
