Obituary for Dr. Boniface Chukwuemekka Abba

It is with our deepest sorrow to announce the passing of Dr. Boniface Chukwuemekka Abba M.D. on Friday, April 21st, 2017. Dr. Abba died peacefully of natural causes at his home with his family. He was 74 years old.

Dr. Abba began his long medical journey when he left his small village in Nigeria to attend undergraduate school in the States, at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. He continued his education at the University of Hawaii, School of Medicine in Honolulu, before completing a five year, general surgery residency program at the University of Stony Brook in New York, NY. Dr. Abba then advanced his skills and found his passion for Oncology at the prestigious Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York before making the island of St. Thomas his beloved home.

It was there, the beautiful island of St. Thomas, that he began to build the legacy we all know. His often intimidating demeanor hardly matched his gentle, giving spirit, and his big heart of gold. He was a surgeon who truly valued helping and healing the people of St. Thomas, a place he loved so much. Due to his hard work and dedication, he was not only able to achieve the American Dream, he was also able to pay his good fortune forward to those who were less fortunate. He never turned a patient away, even accepting fish and mangoes as payment when some patients couldnt afford his care. During his medical career, Dr. Abba was the Medical Director of the Roy Lester Schneider hospital in St. Thomas from 1995-1999.

He was a loving father of five beautiful children, and a self-described OK husband to his two ex-wives. For the duration of his life he continued to take care of his immediate family and those back home in Nigeria. Going above and beyond is truly an understatement to Dr. Abbas character. Work was his life and passion, because his work gave life to so many.

Dr. Abba is survived by his children; Joshua Abba, Elanya Abba, Alissa Abba, Celina Abba and Fiona Abba, and his sister Christiana Nneke Uwaoma.
