Obituary for Axel Esannason

Axel Esannason died peacefully at his home in NY on February 18. Axel was born on St. Thomas on September 15, 1941 and spent his early years here before moving to NY when he was a teenager. He enlisted in the Army in the 60’s and later joined the NYC Fire Department. During his 28 years as a firefighter in various fire houses Axel saved many lives and won accolades for his bravery. At one point he volunteered to be transferred to the South Bronx during the terrible fires that ravaged that area during the 1970’s and 1980’s. He was cited for his heroism in a NY Times article in 1987 for saving four lives in a horrendous fire in Far Rockaway, putting his own in danger.
Axel always looked forward to his frequent visits to St. John, a community and place he loved and where he had his second home.
In addition to his wife of 65 years, Sandra, he is survived by his daughter Kelly Esannason-Antkies and son Christian; a brother, Anton, sisters, Thyra Hammond and Emelda LeDee, granddaughter, Alana, and many other relatives and friends.
A private service will be held at Hurley Funeral Home on Monday, March 5, 2018.
Interment: Western Cemetery #3
Arrangements are under the care of Hurley Funeral Home and Cremation Center of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix.
