What Is Cremation?

There are many reasons why you may prefer cremation to a traditional burial and many ways to incorporate cremation into an end-of-life ceremony. While some still think of scattering ashes, the choices for disposition of remains is quite varied. Remains may be scattered, kept in a cremation urn, stored in a columbarium, made into jewelry, or even buried in the ground or in a casket with another family member.

Some basic cremation choices include the following:

Traditional Cremation Service
The traditional cremation service may consist of variations from the classic religious ceremony to a contemporary gathering and may include a viewing or visitation, a formal service at our funeral home, local church, or other venue, and any necessary transportation.

Memorial Service
A memorial service, with or without the cremated remains present, may be planned at the funeral home or at a location of your choice.

Graveside Service
A graveside service or gathering is held at the burial site. This can be arranged separately or in conjunction with a memorial service.

Once you know what type of service you prefer, tailoring it to reflect your loved one can bring both comfort and the joy of creating a truly unique tribute. For any type of service, memorial register books, booklets, bookmarks, and prayer cards may be desired; live or recorded music is often included; and floral tributes are typically displayed. Photographs, a DVD tribute, and other memorabilia may be used to further personalize the service.

You family has many choices surrounding cremation: religious, contemporary, or memorial services, scattering ceremonies, or even simple cremation. The professionals of Hurley Funeral Home are here to guide your family through these choices and options.
